At 99 million years old, burmite ants are among the oldest, if not the most ancient, ant fossils globally, dating back to the dawn of the ant family (Formicidae). Most bear striking resemblance to today's ants, but a rare, terrifying subfamily, Haidomyrmecinae or 'Hell Ants', stood out. These were distinguished by head horns, protrusions, and vertically positioned mandibles, giving them a demonic, otherworldly appearance.
