This striking vintage Russian lacquer box (3.75 x 2.5 ) is in excellent condition. It features a hand-painted scene titled Volga, created in the celebrated Kholuy tradition of miniature art. A bold hero on horseback rides through a mythical landscape, surrounded by noblewomen, stylized architecture, and swirling waters teeming with fish.
Signed by the artist Belov (Белов) and marked Kholuy (Холуй), this piece was handcrafted in the USSR and showcases the rich folklore and vivid detail typical of Kholuy lacquer work. The box is made from papier-mâché, finished with a glossy black lacquer exterior and a vibrant red lacquer interior.
Perfect as a jewelry or keepsake box, this collectible is a conversation starter and a beautiful example of Soviet-era folk art. Circa 1970's.
